Canadian Early Childhood Encylopedia Now Available in Portuguese
Canada’s Centre of Excellence for Early Childhood Development and Brazil’s National Council of Health Secretaries sign partnership agreement for the production and distribution of Portuguese Early Childhood Encyclopedia.
MONTREAL, QUEBEC, MAY 19, 2010 — Launched three years ago in French and English, and translated into Spanish in 2008, the world renowned Encylopedia on Early Childhood Development is now available in Portuguese, a world language. Thanks to a partnership agreement signed by Canada’s Centre of Excellence for Early Childhood Development and Brazil’s National Council of Health Secretaries (Conselho Nacional de Secretarios de Saude), the best scientific knowledge on early childhood development will be available to a wider community around the world.
“We are grateful to the Centre of Excellence for making early childhood development a priority and providing a resource to help shape national public policies for young children,” said Mr. José Gomes Temporao, Brazil’s Minister of Health. “We also appreciate the work undertaken by the National Council of Health Secretaries in producing the Portuguese version. Public managers, planners, practitioners, academics and Brazilian households will have full and free access to the information included in the Encyclopedia’s 39 topics,” he added.
Developed in Canada, the Encyclopedia on Early Childhood Development is the leading resource for the best and most up-to-date information available on the development of young children. The web-based Encyclopedia contains the latest findings, collected through scientific research, in three levels of language according to the needs of the reader: experts’ articles; simplified syntheses; and key messages. The Encyclopedia is free of charge and covers a wide range of topics from aggression, attachment and language, to parenting skills, prevention of child maltreatment and school transition.
“Early childhood is a crucial stage in the life of a human being. From conception to age five, children undergo a phase of accelerated growth that lays the foundation for their future. The information available in the Encyclopedia helps parents, practitioners and policy makers make the best decisions to help children achieve their full potential,” said Richard Temblay, Director of the Centre of Excellence for Early Childhood Development. “Brazil is one of the world’s most populated countries and has over 16 million households with children under the age of six. As such, Brazil has made young children and the prevention of violence in early childhood a priority. The Encyclopedia is an important tool of their early childhood program.”
The Encyclopedia was developed to provide readers from around the world access to the best information available on the development of young children. Under the aegis of the Centre of Excellence for Early Childhood Development (CEECD) and the Strategic Knowledge Cluster on ECD (SKC-ECD), several hundred experts of international renown contribute to this unique virtual resource.
A world language, Portuguese is spoken by over 240 million people in Portugal, East Timor, Macau, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau, Angola, Mozambique, and São Tomé e Príncipe, as well as Brazil. There are over 220,000 Portuguese Canadians in Toronto and Montréal.
The Encyclopedia is available in Portuguese at www.enciclopedia-crianca.com, in English at www.child-encyclopedia.com, in French at www.enfant-encyclopedie.com, and in Spanish at www.enciclopedia-infantes.com.
